Conjunctions

Conjunctions, also known as joiners, are words that connect parts of sentences. They can be used to connect words, phrases or clauses.

Coordinating Conjunctions

Coordinating conjunctions are the simplest forms of conjunctions found in sentences. There are seven of these, all listed below.

  • For
  • And
  • But
  • Nor
  • Or
  • So
  • Yet

Example Sentences

Johnny took the picture and had it developed.
I like Susan, but she doesn't like me.
We had pizza, hot dogs and tacos for lunch.

Correlative Conjunctions

Correlative conjunctions refer to pairs of words that connect other words together. To be used correctly, the words they connect must be the same part of speech. For example, verbs must be connected with verbs, and noun must be connected with nouns. Check out the examples below.

Good Example

Debbie is not only confident but also brave. (In this sentence, an adjective is connected to an adjective.)

Bad Example

Debbie is not only confident but also a skydiver. (In this sentence, an adjective is connected to a noun.)

The most frequently used correlative conjunctions are:

  • Both, and
  • Not only, but also
  • Either, or
  • Neither, nor
  • Whether, or

Prepositions

Similar to conjunctions, prepositions also join parts of sentences but in a different way. Typically, prepositions describe the relationship of an object in the sentence to the rest of the sentence. In the examples below, the object is italicized and the preposition is in bold.

The book is on the table.
The chair is beside the desk.
The cards are beneath the bed.

Some other common prepositions include:

  • About
  • Above
  • Among
  • After
  • Before
  • From
  • Inside
  • Within

Interjections

Interjections are words or short phrases used to express excitement, commands or protests. They usually stand alone and are set off from the rest of the sentence with a comma. However, they can also be followed by exclamation points.

No, I don't think that is true.
Oh, I didn't know that.
Wow! Are you serious?

Punctuation

Punctuation refers to the symbols used at the end of sentences or within sentences to provide structure and organization. A sentence that doesn't have punctuation can become confusing. Therefore, knowing the basic punctuation rules is important when doing English homework and written work.

Periods

Periods (.) are used at the end of statements and indirect questions.

Johnny went to the store.
He asked where his keys were.

Question Marks

Question marks (?) are used at the end of direct questions and sentences that are part statement and part question.

Why are you acting that way?
You don't really want to know, do you?

Exclamation Points

Exclamation points (!) are placed at the end of sentence to show excitement, anger or surprise.

That is absolutely fantastic!
That was totally unacceptable!
Did you find this useful? If so, please let others know!
