Where to Find Help with Geometry
At School
Your first step for finding help should be your child's teacher. Often, if a student doesn't understand a concept, the teacher will dedicate more time in class to discussing that concept. All your child has to do is raise his or her hand and ask! However, if your child needs help outside of class, many teachers are willing to work one-on-one with their students before or after school. Either you or your child can set up a meeting with the teacher. To maximize the time spent working one-on-one, be sure that your child knows exactly what he or she needs help with.
Alternatively, your child's school may have a free tutoring program. Inquire with your child's teacher or a school administrator for more information. If nothing else, your child's school may be able to refer you to a local learning center that provides after-school homework help for students.

In elementary school, you can expect your child to learn geometry skills like classifying shapes, identifying lines of symmetry and graphing on a coordinate plane. Here are a few terms that your child will likely have to know in geometry:
- Point
- One dot on a coordinate plane. Your child may have to identify the coordinates of a point.
- Line
- Lines can extend forever and contain unlimited points. In elementary school, the lines your child works with will likely be horizontal or vertical.
- Ray
- A part of a line that has one endpoint and continues on forever in the other direction.
- Angle
- Two rays that share an endpoint form an angle.
Hiring a Tutor
If your child needs help beyond what you and his or her teacher can provide, then you might consider hiring a tutor. Although in-person tutors typically cost money, you may be able to find an online tutor for free. Websites like MathNerds.com offer free math assistance for students of all ages. The downside is that your child will not receive immediate feedback.
If your child only needs limited assistance with geometry, then you might consider going to a tutoring center. After a few visits, your child may not need the additional assistance anymore. For more personal and on-going tutoring services, consider hiring a private tutor who visits your child on a weekly basis.
