# 4th Grade Homework Help and Assignments

Helping your child with homework and school assignments doesn't have to be difficult. Keep reading for some activities and exercises that you can use to provide after-school practice.

## How Can I Help My Child with 4th Grade Homework?

If your 4th grader needs help with homework, begin by discussing and analyzing the areas that may be causing problems. Once you've determined which topics and subjects your child struggles with the most, then you can understand how to assist with new assignments.

When you have a better idea of what you want to focus on during your child's study time, then you can begin to create lesson plans, study guides, games and activities. You can use the following ideas to get started and add your own as you go along.

## Three Homework Assignments for 4th Graders

### Multiplication Story Problems

In 4th grade math, students should be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers. To test this, many teachers will create word or story problems for in-class assignments and tests. You can help your child practice and prepare by writing your own multiplication story problems or printing free worksheets from the Internet.

Typically, these questions are short and basic. Here's a sample word problem:

The school cafeteria serves 780 hot lunches every day. In a regular 5-day school week, how many lunches will be served total?

First, your child should identify what math operation he or she needs to use. In this case, it's multiplication because you're multiplying the number of hot lunches served each day by the total number of days in the week. After multiplying 780 x 5, your child will discover that there are 3,900 lunches served each week.

### Solar System Puzzle

Educational games give students the opportunity to review material while having fun. You can make your own puzzles and games; one way to do this is to find free puzzle generators online and use them to create subject-specific games for your child. For example, in 4th grade science, your child will be learning about space and the solar system, so you can create a crossword for him or her to complete. You can enter definitions as the clues and key terms as the answers. For instance, a clue for Mercury might be, 'This is the closest planet to the sun.'

### Simile and Metaphor Illustrations

Similes and metaphors are two literary devices that 4th grade students will study. While there are commonly used examples, like 'quiet as a mouse,' the opportunities for creating new ones are endless. To help your child differentiate between the two and get the creative juices flowing, have him or her come up with three examples of each. Then, to add to the activity, you can ask your child to illustrate his or her favorite simile and metaphor.
