How to Get the GED in Nashville

The GED Test

The GED exam is composed of five separate tests designed to measure the concepts and skills gained by the end of high school. Passing the tests means that you have demonstrated the same level of knowledge as someone with a high school diploma. The GED credential is recognized as equivalent to a high school diploma by most employers and colleges.

The subject areas you're tested on include: reading, writing, science, social studies and mathematics. Most of the questions are multiple-choice and an essay is required for the writing portion.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants who are 18 years old and have not received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate are eligible to take the test. You may also take the test at 17 if you are not enrolled in high school. You may also be eligible if you are 17 and currently enrolled in a state-approved GED Option Program.

Taking the Test

Before registering for the test, you must first present evidence that you have completed the OPT. The OPT and preparatory classes are offered for free at adult education centers throughout Tennessee. To find centers in Nashville, contact your local adult education office or the state GED Office at the Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

The GED can't be taken online; it must be taken at an approved test center. In addition to English, the exam has Spanish and French versions. Accommodations for individuals with documented disabilities are also available.

Passing Scores

A total score of at least 2,250 is required to earn the Tennessee High School Equivalency Diploma. Additionally, no single test score can be lower than 410 to pass. The tests may be retaken up to three times in a calendar year. A 30-day waiting period is required unless a waiver is obtained from the test center. Additionally, an instructor at an adult education program may request a time waiver for a student, provided the student has an adequate score on the OPT.
