4th Grade Reading Samples and Passages
Parents who want to help their children do their best on state reading tests can find help on the Internet. Browse the following websites to find sample questions, full-length tests and other activities that have reading passages you can use with your child.
EDinformatics' State Reading Tests Online
EDinformatics has links to reading comprehension tests for most states available on its website. Since most standardized reading tests are geared to national core standards, you can use tests from your own state or other states to help your child practice. A curriculum page lists instructional frameworks for each state so you can see what your child is expected to know.
Florida has several tests with reading passages and answer keys from 2002 through 2007 available to download. The questions have a variety of answer formats, including multiple-choice and short and long written responses. Other states, such as Texas and Idaho, offer interactive reading tests that can be taken and graded entirely online.
Pearson Longman's Reading Passages
Pearson Longman has sample 4th grade reading passages on its website. Although designed for LEP (Limited English Proficiency) students, the passages can be beneficial for any child who needs reading comprehension practice. Each test has two reading passages followed by questions requiring multiple-choice and written answers. Scoring instructions are given on the website and an answer key is available from the publisher.
EnglishForEveryone.org Reading Comprehension Worksheets
EnglishForEveryone.org has reading comprehension worksheets to help your child practice for state standardized tests. Reading passages are similar to those children will find on standardized reading tests and are divided into beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. They require the use of higher order thinking skills because they challenge kids to identify the main idea, tone and scope of passages.
Each title lists the number of words in the passage, number of questions and level of reading. The passages are divided into five categories, including short stories, informational, technical, dual-version and critical reading comprehension passages.
