5th Grade Interactive Geometry Lessons
With the advent and rise of the Internet, there are innumerable interactive games, exercises and quizzes to help teachers teach and students learn. Even flash cards and worksheets have become interactive. Follow this guide for 5th grade interactive geometry aids.
Guide for Making 5th Grade Geometry Easy and Fun
What 5th Grade Students Learn in Geometry
There are two major components in 5th grade geometry. Students learn to graph using a coordinate plane. Coordinate planes are students' introduction to analytical geometry. They will be used in many math classes, such as algebra and calculus.
Students in 5th grade also learn to use the properties of 2-dimensional shapes to classify those shapes. A shape is classified by properties such as the number of sides, the type of angles and whether its sides are parallel or not.
Interactive Activities on the Internet
Interactive activities and games reinforce material taught in class and also provide ways for students to explore the concept. For example, some websites, like Cut the Knot, are simply vehicles for students to virtually 'draw' a variety of angles or shapes by moving the corners or lines (www.cut-the-knot.org).
If you need interactive assessments, try That Quiz, which allows students to take quizzes online (www.thatquiz.org). Teachers may register to keep track of student scores and also generate their own quizzes.
Many games are free on the Internet. Others - usually the more exciting arcade-style games - must be purchased. Free interactive applications may be found through the Federal Resources for Educational Excellence (www.free.ed.gov). Similarly, the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives (http://nlvm.usu.edu) and Utah State University (http://enlvm.usu.edu) have numerous types of manipulatives that can be used in geometry classes.
Interactive Geometry Lessons
Among the many sites that have 5th grade math lesson plans that include interactive components, the Rockingham County Public Schools in Virginia offer an array of lessons that include ideas for geometry lesson plans, standards-of-learning reviews, interactive activities, SMART Board activities, PowerPoint files and many other teacher resources (www.rockingham.k12.va.us).
Other sources include the Awesome Library (www.awesomelibrary.org) and the teachers' resources on Funbrain (www.funbrain.com). Sites with a number of links to free and interactive 5th grade lesson plans are Home School Math (www.homeschoolmath.net), Internet4Classrooms (www.internet4classrooms.com) and Math4Children (www.math4children.com).
