Online Tutoring 3 of 5: Is Online Tutoring Right for Your Child?

This third article in the Online Tutoring informational series clarifies who is targeted by online tutoring services and how online tutoring works to include the largest number of students and families possible.

Find available tutors

If you've been interested in a clearer picture of online tutoring and the benefits it can offer your child, and you've read through the previous articles in this series, chances are you're becoming more interested in whether online tutoring is right for you. Most parents are pleased to learn that online tutoring does cater their programs to specific children with varied needs and strengths. Online tutoring also serves a relatively wide age range of students, but private tutors, who might teach one very specific subject to kids from 2nd to 12th grade, might still remain an option for parents with children outside the age brackets targeted by internet tutoring sites.

The Fusion of Convenience and Efficiency

Online tutoring's largest selling point is the convenience of the programs and the tried and true methods that are most often borrowed from a tutoring website's brick and mortar tutoring centers. These methods have been proven to work by creating individual programs specific to each student. Tutoring specialists administer a test (usually for a fee) that determines where and with what your child needs the most help. Programs full of exercises and activities are then created to target your child's needs. The preferences, interests, and learning styles specific to your child are kept in mind while creating their program.

Ultimately, online tutors aim to deliver the most effective, efficient, and enjoyable tutoring program available for your family. As long as a student is within the age brackets targeted by the tutoring company, online tutoring becomes appropriate for any child.

Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, and Beyond...

The two broad subjects that online tutors offer programs for are math and reading, but within these programs a child can learn and develop more specific skills that not only bring a child up to grade level standards in math or reading, but also up to where math and reading join with other subjects and real world experiences. In this way, math tutoring is perfect for students struggling with basic arithmetic, measuring, fractions, long division, or geometry.

Students who are having trouble with trigonometry, pre-algebra, and statistics can also benefit from an online tutoring program that reinforces basic skills. The same can be said for reading programs available for students in grades 4 through 9. Reading programs that are offered through an online tutor provide help with phonics, syntax, and reading comprehension and analysis.

Becoming Involved

Online tutoring also seems relatively dedicated to most parents. Rather than being a program just for students who might have been pushed to get help from a teacher, online tutoring remains a serious option for parents who want to remain a part of their children's learning experience. In fact, most programs offer detailed, scheduled parent conferences that allows the student's parents or guardians to see what their child is really accomplishing when they complete their, online tutoring session.
