Tutoring Activities and Lesson Plans

Tutoring activities and lesson plans must be tailored to the needs of the student you are tutoring. You must know the strengths and weaknesses of that student and create a lesson that will help him or her improve in the subject area he or she is struggling with. Whether you are tutoring your own child at home or one of your students at school, use the following activities to reinforce skills and concepts that he or she learned in school.

The Importance of Fun Tutoring Activities

The main goal of a tutor is to help students succeed independently in school. In order for this to happen, the students must be fully engaged in the lessons and confident enough to solve problems on his or her own. Fun and interactive tutoring activities play an important role in ensuring that students are interested in the material, which will help them become confident in their abilities.

Draw and Write

This is a fun game that you can do together while practicing writing skills. Get a piece of paper and draw a line anywhere on the sheet and hand it to your student. He or she should continue the picture by drawing another line. Keep going back and forth until you both agree that the picture is finished. Then, have your student write a creative story about the picture that the both of you just made. If you have some extra time, you can take turns coloring the picture.

Don't Drop the Ball

Help your student practice skip counting (counting by twos, fives, tens, etc.) with this activity. Get a ball and tell her that you will be counting by twos (or whatever number you would like to count by) and toss the ball to her. Have her say the next number, and then toss the ball back to you. Keep going until you reach 100. If you or your student drops the ball, you must start over. As an added challenge, you can add a timer to the game to see if you and your student make it to 100 before the timer goes off.

Long and Short Vowels

Learning vowels sounds is an important part of learning how to read. This is a fun activity that will get your student up and moving while learning about short and long vowel sounds. Explain that when you say a word, she will stand up if she hears a short vowel and sit down if she hears a long vowel. For example, if you say the word cat, she will remain seated, if you say the word late, she will stand. If she makes a mistake, then have her sound out each letter of the word.
