3rd Grade TAKS Math Test Preparation: Practice Worksheets
Texas 3rd graders take the math TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) every spring. If your child could use some help preparing for this exam, the following sites may be useful. Read on for more information on how your child can review online for free.
Review Materials from the Texas Education Agency
Many math websites can prepare 3rd graders for the math TAKS, but you may want to use those that are aligned with the state curriculum standards, which are called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). You can find more information about these state standards at the Texas Education Agency's website. The website also has information about the new State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) program, which is set to replace the TAKS in the spring of 2012. The new program will cover the same topics as the TAKS.
To prepare your child for the math assessment exam, you can download a PDF of a released 2009 3rd grade TAKS math exam, along with an answer key, at the TEA website. The test includes questions on reading charts and thermometers, addition problems with 3-digit numbers, fractions and areas.
Worksheets from Math Fact Cafe
Once you know what math skills your child needs to master, you can download the free 3rd grade math worksheets offered here. Math Fact Cafe has worksheets and flashcards for students who need to practice arithmetic and fractions. The worksheets are printable and come with answer keys, but the flashcards are made for online practice. The 3rd grade page is divided into sections for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Fraction activities are contained within those four headings, so you can find fraction addition problems in the appropriate area.
These activities will not provide comprehensive TAKS review, but can be a good starting point. Several dozen practice problems are available for each type of arithmetic.
Math Practice from IXL.com
These online math problems can give your child a chance to test his or her skills with specific math units. The topics are listed in neat rows and to view practice problems you can click on any of the links. The questions appear one at a time onscreen, and the computer scores - and tracks - the answers. If your child is doing well, the difficulty level will increase to meet your child's level. Some of the topics covered here include place value, estimation and rounding, money, time and measurement.
