5th Grade Reading and Writing Test Prep
Many 5th graders are required to take national and state standardized tests in reading and writing. Preparing for these tests doesn't have to be stressful and boring because there are plenty of free online resources to help motivate and instruct kids while they learn. Keep reading to learn more!
Education.com's Lessons
Education.com has interactive lessons covering all areas of grammar, literary analysis and vocabulary. You can select activities, games and drills to provide your child with a variety of lessons and practice.
Many of the activities are suitable for children who struggle with reading because they are hands-on and interactive. For instance, Fishing for Headlines has kids matching newspaper headlines to their corresponding articles. Additionally, in Vocabulary Bingo, kids match vocabulary words with the appropriate definitions.
Have Fun Teaching's Reading Comprehension Worksheets
Have Fun Teaching has downloadable, high-interest reading passages with questions and answers. These activities allow kids to practice for reading comprehension tests by using the information in a fiction or non-fiction story to answer questions. The stories are high-interest reading including a short biography of Justin Bieber and an interview with a dog trainer.
Graphic organizers are also available on the website to help teach children about cause and effect, organization, sequencing and comparisons. Worksheets are also available for writing and grammar.
Reading Activities from Scholastic
Scholastic lets kids get involved with reading by participating in interactive activities. Kids can interact with books by playing games, taking quizzes, watching author interviews and contributing their opinions. There are also activities to accompany current movies, which can help with comprehension and analysis skills.
For each book or series, kids can play online games, write riddles and even create their own wallpaper to download. For the Animorphs series, kids learn about characters from the series and 'morph' them into an animal.
