How to Help Your 5th Grader Spell

When you're going over spelling books with your child, you may want to aim for 15 minutes per day. This is enough time for a typical child to practice words, but not so long that he or she will get bored and distracted. The Internet can provide 5th grade spelling games and activities that you can do with your child or have him or her complete alone. You can also find activities that are similar to the content in spelling books. Additionally, there are websites devoted to home schooling that will offer you a detailed list of many of the 5th grade spelling books that are in print.

Although you can purchase professional spelling textbooks online or at education stores in your area, you can also find and use many free spelling lists, as well as create your own. When creating a spelling list, have your child write a sentence next to each term using it in context. Give your child examples to help.

Creating a Spelling Book

Every morning, you can write a word of the day on a whiteboard in a high traffic area in your home, like the kitchen. Have your child use this word in a sentence at some point over dinner. At the end of the school week, compile the five words on one page and review them all. Then, at the end of the school year, compile all of these words into a single book with your child.

Playing Word Games

Use a spelling list to create a crossword puzzle or a word search for your child. This game will help your child solidify both the spelling and meaning of new terms. There are websites that will allow you to enter spelling words and then automatically generate puzzles that you can print.

Finding Spelling Errors

A solid way to help improve your child's spelling, as well as his or her spelling confidence, is to create activities in which your 5th grader must find and correct errors. Although there are websites that offer games where spelling correction is the objective, you can create activities of this nature with relative ease. Pick a passage in a book your child is reading, whether for school or for pleasure. Retype the familiar passage with a number of spelling errors and print it out. Next, have your child find and correct these errors.
