How Can I Help My Child Prepare for the 7th Grade CRCT?

Learn More About the CRCT

On the the CRCT, students in 7th grade are tested in reading, English/language arts, math, science and social studies. All sections of the 7th grade CRCT are presented in a multiple-choice format. Over the course of the year, your child's teachers will prepare him for the test by teaching a curriculum that is aligned with the Georgia Performance Standards.

Reading

The reading portion contains passages of various genres, including poetry. Your child will be required to answer questions about each one that test comprehension and vocabulary.

English/Language Arts

This exam covers sentence and paragraph structure, punctuation, grammar and capitalization. Your child may also be asked questions about how to look up information.

Mathematics

The math section of the 7th grade CRCT deals with word problems, algebra, measurements and geometry. Students are also asked to analyze data on graphs and charts.

Science

Your child can expect the science part of the test to focus on genetics, evolution and life sciences. The test may include diagrams and classification tables.

Social Studies

The social studies portion of the exam covers global geography, world history, government and economics. Your child may also be asked to interpret maps and charts.

Be Proactive

The key to helping your child do well on the 7th grade CRCT is to make sure that she is on top of her work throughout the year. Communicate with her teachers so that you know where she needs the most help. Provide her with a supportive home environment so that she can read, study for tests and complete her homework consistently. The better your child does at school, the easier it will be for her to prepare for the CRCT, because she'll have a strong knowledge base.

Use CRCT Resources

To prepare your child for the test, you can acquire the CRCT Grade 7 Study Guide from the Georgia Department of Education or from your child's school (www.doe.k12.ga.us). If you notice that your child is weak in certain areas listed in the study guide, you can teach those skills yourself or let him complete some of the free standards-based activities available at various educational websites.

Shortly before the CRCT, your child can use the free practice materials at the Online Assessment System provided by the Georgia Department of Education. Your child may receive a login and password from his school to access this useful resource. If not, you can use 'grade7,' which is a generic login and password provided by Georgia.

Administer Practice Exams

You can download previous 7th grade CRCT exams from various websites in the Georgia public school system. Provide your child with a calm test environment and time her as she takes the exam. Correct your child's exam and help her improve in the areas where it's most needed.
