Reading Is Fundamental is an organization dedicated to promoting reading for children. It has created a fun literacy website for kids called Reading Planet that may be just the resource that your child needs to improve his or her comprehension skills. Reading Planet's content is divided into four main categories: games, activities, self-expression and book information. Although it isn't required, you and your child can sign in to the site at no cost for extra benefits, like the ability to enter contests and create an online reading log.

ReadWriteThink's Reading Comprehension Resources

Look no further than ReadWriteThink's website for a variety of helpful reading comprehension tools and resources. These resources include learning strategy guides, a plethora of lesson plans that you can use at home, printouts, learning activities calendars, games and reading comprehension activities. The student interactives are online learning tools that are unique to ReadWriteThink. For these interactives to work, you'll need to have Adobe Flash installed. ReadWriteThink's student interactives cover a number of comprehension topics including, but not limited to, parts of speech, idioms, post-reading organization, plot structures and characterization.

Book Adventure's Book Lists and Quizzes

Book Adventure is a website designed specifically to encourage K-12 kids to read for fun. Its main features include extensive book lists and quizzes. There are over 8,000 books listed that you and your child can look through for reading materials. These books can be categorized by grade level, difficulty or category, like literary collections, animals, horror and ghost stories, history, science fiction and much more. For every book your child reads from the Book Adventure's list, there's a corresponding online comprehension quiz that he or she can take. Your child will receive points for each quiz and can potentially earn a number of prizes, such as games, playbooks, a chocolate bar and a 6-month subscription to Highlights for Kids magazine.
