An Overview of 5th Grade Math

At the 5th grade level, your child will be working to improve his or her fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions and will be developing a solid understanding of multiplication and division of fractions. It is also important that your 5th grader understands volume and knows how to determine the volume of a container. Lastly, students should be able to extend their ability to divide to include divisors with two digits. Your child will also be learning to work with decimals up to the hundredths place.

What to Expect on the New York Citywide Math Test

New York City public school students will be expected to take a standardized math test each school year. At the 5th grade level, your child will be tested on his or her ability to solve problems related to algebra, measurement, statistics and probability, number sense and geometry. This is a timed test that will require your child to answer multiple-choice and open-ended questions. When your child responds to an open-ended question, it will be important that he or she uses completes sentences with correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. Of course, within each of these content areas, your 5th grader must be able to demonstrate fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Why Should My Child Take a Practice Test?

Often, the mere thought of a standardized test makes students uncomfortable, which can negatively affect their performance. By providing your child the chance to take a practice test, you are allowing him or her the opportunity to become more familiar with the format. When the actual test day arrives, your child will likely feel more confident and better prepared to answer questions to the best of his or her ability.

A practice test will also allow 5th graders to review their math operations in each of the main focus areas. If a particular area is giving your student difficulties, then you will have the time to devote some extra practice before the big test day!
