Techniques for Successfully Finishing Homework

Create a homework schedule for your child and make sure that it is consistently followed at home. Before establishing a schedule, consider the time of day that your child works best, whether that's right after school or after dinner. Be flexible and make sure that the schedule works with - not against - your child.

Prioritizing each day's homework assignments may help your child stay more focused. For example, if your child hates completing math homework, then maybe that should be the first one he or she tackles to get it out of the way. Or, your may decide to complete the assignments that he or she finds to be easiest first.

Lastly, you could decide to prioritize assignments based on the length of time you expect each to take. For instance, maybe your child has three assignments that can be completed in a matter of minutes; your child may want to eliminating those first and then focus on the more time-consuming tasks. Homework should not have to be a battle; pay attention to the clues your child may be sending you and allow that to guide the schedule you create.

Common Homework Topics

In the geometry, your child may be asked to divide a shape into equal parts and then represent the area of each part with a fraction. Additionally, he or she may have homework that requires him or her to fluently multiply and divide within 100. Your child will likely have to solve 2-step variable word problems that use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Third grade fraction homework may have your child generating equivalent fractions or comparing fractional amounts with the same numerator or denominator. Furthermore, homework may require your child to round numbers to the nearest ten or 100. Your child will also be expected to multiply a 1-digit whole number by a multiple of ten.

Sample homework items related to measurement and data could have your student telling and writing time to the nearest minute. Or, your child may be estimating and measuring the volume of a liquid or the mass of an object using standard units of measurement. While this is not a complete list of what your third grader may encounter in his or her homework, it is a good overview of the skills you may want to focus on.
