What Your Child Will Study

Although 6th grade curriculums tend to vary from state to state and school to school, many are based on the similar common core education standards. Your child will likely be required to take standardized exams in math, English/language arts and possibly science, social studies and technical subjects. Additionally, much of the homework that you'll be helping your child with is designed to help him or her master the learning standards mandated by your state.

Creating a Positive Learning Environment

Create a dedicated workspace where your child can complete his or her homework. Keep this space free of clutter and other distractions, like computers, cell phones and the television. Have your child work on homework at the same time each and every day so that he or she becomes accustomed to always concentrating at the same time. When helping your 6th grader, use positive reinforcement rather than criticism in order to nurture a positive attitude towards learning.

Short-Term and Long-Term Help

Short-term homework help will help your child get through specific homework assignments and learn specific skills. Instead of doing your 6th grader's homework for him or her, provide guidance so that he or she may complete similar assignments in the future. Have your child read aloud or explain concepts to you to make sure that the central ideas are being grasped.

In the long term, you can teach your child strong study skills. Students who have solid study skills and know how to manage their time often do well on tests, quizzes and homework. As your child gets older, teachers will expect students to work independently and take on additional responsibilities. For instance, your child might be assigned a project that he or she must complete entirely at home. Begin fostering your child's independence early so he or she will succeed academically in the future.
