Homework and Assignments for 7th Graders

Most 7th grade curriculums are based on the Common Core State Standards. Becoming familiar with these standards can be helpful when it comes to understanding what your 7th grader needs to learn for standardized and placement exams. The majority of homework and school assignments that your child will encounter are likely to be in line with these standards.

It can be difficult to get 7th graders to do their homework; many 7th graders are distracted by social plans, the Internet, texting or talking on the phone. Stay involved with the educational progress of your child by spending time wit him or her and providing assistance with homework as needed. These days, teachers often post homework assignments online so students can access them from home. This way, kids always have reminders of due dates for assignments and projects are accessible anytime. Having this information easily accessible will also come in handy when you're helping your child complete his or her work because you'll know exactly what the teacher expects.

There are almost endless assignments that you can give your child at home to help enhance his or her learning. These are just a few.

Math

It's likely that your 7th grader will need to learn about algebraic and geometric concepts like equations, expressions, the number system, probability and ratios. An example of an interactive math assignment you can give your child at home involves finding the areas of circles.

Explain the terms 'perimeter' and 'radius' to your child and use the rounded figure of '3.14' to represent pi. Draw a series of circles on a sheet of paper. Mark the perimeter and radius lengths clearly in centimeters and have your child work out the area for each circle in centimeters squared on a sheet of paper. If your child makes a mistake, go over his or her work and explain the corrections.

English/Language Arts

In 7th grade English/language arts, your child will probably be focused on writing and reading literature and informational texts. To help your child, map out several simple steps to creating a fictional narrative. These steps could be determining a setting and situation, creating characters, then developing a conflict, climax and final resolution. Have your child recognize these steps in a short story and then create his or her own narrative. If your child needs help, provide him or her with a series of settings and situations to draw from.

History/Social Studies Assignments

What your child learns in social studies can vary from school to school and state to state. World history and ancient civilizations is a topic commonly covered in the 7th grade. Have your child create a chart comparing and contrasting two civilizations that he or she has studied at school. For example, your child could find three similarities and three differences between Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece.
