GED West Virginia: Learn About the West Virginia GED and How to Prepare for the GED Test

Eligibility

The following is a general set of eligibility requirements, as adapted from the West Virginia Adult Distance Education Program:

• You are at least 16 years of age
• You are not enrolled in high school
• You do not have a high school diploma or an equivalency certificate
• If you are between 16 and 18 years of age, your testing center will have additional requirements.
• You don't have to be a West Virginia resident to take the GED exams.

Format

The GED exam consists of the following five subject test areas:

• Language Arts, Writing
  • A 45-minute essay composition
• Language Arts, Reading
• Mathematics
• Social Studies
• Science

Scoring

According to West Virginia's Adult Distance Education Program, www.wvabe.org, you must achieve a total score of at least 2250 points and a score of at least 410 on each subtest to pass the GED. If you fail the exam, you'll only have three years to pass all five sections and acquire your GED credential.

Registration and Fees

You'll need to register in person at the testing center where you'll be taking the GED exam. The West Virginia Adult Distance Education Program, provides a listing of official West Virginia testing centers at www.wvabe.org. While each testing center's fees vary, registration fees of over $50 are prohibited by law, so plan accordingly when registering. Also, when registering for the GED, don't forget to bring a photo ID and a social security card.

Preparation

Visit a library or bookstore to view available GED practice materials, or you can find them online. Inquire at your local community college or adult learning center for information about GED prep courses.
