Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing are tools that will continue to be used in advanced math, from algebra to trigonometry. Practice your basic facts daily to increase your speed and accuracy. It often helps to establish a specific time every night that is dedicated to math review.

Print out worksheets from the Internet and see how fast you can successfully complete all the questions. You can also ask your teacher for additional resources to use at home. Ask a parent or family member to help you practice. Not only will this make review sessions more fun, but it will also help you stick to your schedule.

Form a Study Group

Often, one kind of math will be hard for one person and easy for another. You can benefit from your friends' knowledge and skills by studying together. Gather one or two friends (any more might become too hectic) and review the material as a group. You can compare your answers to homework problems.

Similarly, when preparing for an upcoming test, divide up textbook chapters into equal sections between everyone in the group. Then, get together a day before the test and have each person explain her assigned section to the rest of the group. Remember that no one can take the test for you, so be sure to learn all the sections, not just yours. Also, avoid wasting your study time by talking about non-math-related subjects! This is always a temptation among friends, but with a little concentration, you can stay on topic.

Meet with Your Teacher

Before or after math class, tell your teacher about the trouble you are having with math. Be specific and explain which chapters you found hard. This can seem scary at first, but teachers really want to see their students improve their skills. Your teacher might be able to give you extra-credit assignments to raise your grade, or she might help you find a tutor.
