SOL Math Games

What Are the Standards?

You can find out more about the specific math standards your child will need to learn by navigating to the Virginia Department of Education's website. For elementary and middle school students, the standards are categorized into 'strands,' like geometry, probability and statistics, computation, number sense and measurement.

Younger students study the same strands at each grade level, but the specific skills they learn gradually become more advanced. There are also separate standards of learning for high school math topics, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, discrete mathematics and mathematical analysis.

Where Can I Find SOL Games?

Printable Games

The Virginia Department of Education provides sample lesson plans on its website, and they include numerous activities and games related to the standards. For instance, there's a game called 'The Rocky Digits' that is designed to help 4th graders learn about place values. The materials for the game, including a spinner, cards and a game board, can all be downloaded from the website.

For middle school students, the website also offers a variety of games that use printable materials. For example, you can help your child build spatial reasoning skills by printing out the game board for 'Square It' and playing the game together. In this activity, you and your child will take turns placing colored pieces on the board. The winner is the first player to create a square.

Even if your child is in high school, you'll also find helpful SOL game resources on the site. For instance, in the card game 'Old Poly,' students practice identifying the factors of polynomials. You can download and print the cards for free from the website.

Online Games

After you've perused Virginia's Standards of Learning for math and identified the skills your child needs to practice, you can also find plentiful Web-based games for him or her to play. For instance, the Virginia Department of Education suggests the website www.thinkfinity.org, which allows you to conveniently search for standards-based math games across the Web.
