Getting Ready for 6th Grade Standardized Tests

What Are Standardized Tests?

Most states have a standards-based curriculum that's used to create benchmarks and guidelines for 6th grade teachers in public schools and some private academies. Most likely, you'll take standardized tests in language arts and math. Depending on what state you're going to school in, you may also be tested in science and social studies. There are sometimes other tests for gifted and talented students, non-native English speakers and students with disabilities.

Before beginning test preparation, find out the specific topics on your state test. Get information about the test from your state's board of education, your school or your teachers. Look for descriptions of which learning standards will be assessed on the test. Once you know the exact skills that you need to practice, you can find appropriate test preparation resources on the Internet.

How Can I Prepare at School?

What you do throughout the entire school year will be a determining factor as to how hard you'll have to work when it comes time to study for 6th grade standardized tests. Staying on top of your work during the year will help you to ensure that you're prepared to take the exam in late spring or early summer.

Bring the books and materials you need to class so that you're prepared to work. Avoid distractions and take high quality notes. If you should miss a class, make sure that you find out what the teacher covered and make up the work.

How Can I Prepare at Home?

If at all possible, create a dedicated space that you use exclusively for homework and studying. Keep the space free of clutter and distractions, such as television, cell phones and computers. Naturally, if you need a computer for your schoolwork you can make an exception.

Maintain a regular study schedule if possible. By having a consistent routine, you may be able to train your brain to focus and concentrate at a certain time every day.

The earlier you begin studying for the 6th grade standardized tests, the better. Attempting to cram the night before will probably leave you feeling tired and drained. Go through the notes you took throughout the school year. Review your state's standards and go over the practice materials, such as sample tests and review questions.

What Resources Can I Use for 6th Grade Test Preparation?

To get ready for the standardized tests, check your state's official education website for online practice questions and ask your teachers for extra study materials. There are also online quizzes, worksheets and educational games that aren't state-specific, but may be useful for supplemental practice. Most standardized tests have multiple-choice questions, so you may want to complete similar questions as part of your test prep.
