6th Grade ISAT Test Preparation and Practice Information
The standardized tests in Illinois and Idaho are referred to as the ISAT. Both the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) and the Idaho Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) assess 6th graders on reading and math; additionally, Idaho also tests on language usage. Use the following resources to help your 6th grader prepare.
Practice Exams from the Illinois State Board of Education
From this site, you can download and print sample tests or have your child take the online, interactive assessment. The sample 6th grade reading assessment contains reading passages, multiple-choice questions and one extended response question. The sample math exam also contains multiple-choice questions, as well as a short answer question and an extended response question that require students to show their work. Answer keys are included for the multiple-choice questions in each section. Sample responses and rubrics are available for all the short answer and extended response questions.
If you would prefer that your child's answers be graded instantly, have your child take the interactive test online, which consists only of multiple-choice questions. Because both the Illinois and Idaho ISAT cover the same subjects, your child may benefit from this practice even if you don't live in Illinois.
Idaho State Department of Education's ISAT Resources
Give your 6th grader practice language usage and math exams through the Idaho State Department of Education. The tests are PDF files, so you can print them and simulate the testing environment at home. Students in 6th grade are tested in reading and language usage; however, there's only a practice exam for the language usage portion of the exam. An answer key is included with both the math and language usage practice exams, so you can take note of any patterns in your child's incorrect answers.
You can also find vocabulary lists for each grade level. Download the ISAT vocabulary terms for the 6th grade reading and math exams to review at home so your child will know any word that he comes across on the actual test.
Interactive Test Practice from Prepdog.com
These online practice tests offer your 6th grader the chance to test her language, reading and math skills before the ISAT. The questions are submitted by teachers, and there are several tests at each level: basic, proficient and advanced. Once your child completes her practice test by choosing each answer from a drop-down menu, she can check her work. Prepdog.com was developed by Idaho teachers, so the practice tests may be especially useful for 6th graders preparing for Idaho's ISAT.
