Websites to Help Children with Spelling Words
If your child needs spelling practice, you may be looking for activities that are more engaging than spelling drills. The websites below offer online games and printable activities that can help children with spelling words.
Word Lists and More from KidsSpell.com
If you're looking for spelling lists and games that will keep your child engaged and learning, check out the resources at KidsSpell.com. This site offers over 1,000 spelling lists, and most of them focus on particular letter sounds and blends. When you select the list that's appropriate for your child, the site will load the spelling words from that list into any of the games that he plays. You can also create your own spelling list to be used in the games.
There are three categories for games: easier, harder and hardest. Most of the games are very similar in terms of how they're played; however, each game has a different theme, such as dinosaurs, car racing, wizards or frogs.
Spelling Activity Sheets at Super Teacher Worksheets
You can find printable spelling lists and worksheets for grades 1-4 at Super Teacher Worksheets. There are multiple spelling lists for each grade, and they all include activities that reinforce the words. Your child can practice unscrambling spelling words, putting them in alphabetical order or completing cryptograms.
The first and second grade sections also include holiday-themed spelling lists and worksheets for Halloween, Christmas and Easter, among others. Many of the spelling lists are based on letter sounds and blends, but some cover frequently misspelled words, abbreviations and proper nouns.
Games for Spelling Practice at PBS Kids
If your kid is a fan of the children's programs on PBS, then she may enjoy the spelling games at PBS Kids. Games are based on popular shows, like Clifford the Big Red Dog and Caillou. For example, 'Puppy Letters' features Clifford and his friends, and the game challenges children to spell out simple words in order to complete a sentence.
The interactive games at PBS Kids cover multiple skills, from practicing basic phonics to decoding cryptograms. Some games also allow your child to choose the level of difficulty.
