Online Math Games Using Mathematical Reasoning
Math reasoning can be beneficial for students because it prepares them for solving real-world problems. You can browse the listings on these sites to find a math game for your children. Many times, the game's name will tell you the skill being practiced and the theme of the game.
Logic and Reasoning Games from RinkWorks.com
Your children can have fun challenging their friends or each other to solve these deceptively simple puzzles. Four categories of reasoning problems are presented on the homepage: 'discrete reasoning, 'mathematical reasoning,' 'practical reasoning' and 'riddles.' In each section, there's a list of word problems, many of which are just two or three sentences long. The seemingly impossible situations require kids to think creatively and engage in lively discussions if they are working with someone. Answers and explanations are given for each problem.
Discovery Education's Free Brain Boosters
Discovery Education offers dozens of free problems to help your kids master logic, reasoning, spatial awareness and lateral thinking puzzles. Because the games are word problems, you can either print them out or have your kids read them off the computer.
However, keep in mind that the solutions are given right after the problems. If your kids tend to peek when unsupervised, you might print the questions out and cut off the answers. If you mark each question and answer pair with a colored dot or a jotted note, it will be easy to find the proper answer to go with each question later. This makes a fun 2-person game as well. One person has the stack of questions and the other has the answers. Then, after every problem, the players switch piles.
Math Playground Online Games
These interactive computer games may help your kids develop their mathematical reasoning skills. Select from word problems or logic puzzles, and watch as your kids practice creative problem-solving skills to come up with answers. The logic games are along the lines of a maze or the classic Rubik's cube. More than two dozen games are available. This site also offers math games that test basic skills and require algebraic reasoning.
