GED Mississippi: Earn your Mississipi GED

Mississippi GED Requirements:

Eligibility

Individuals must meet the following requirements in order to take the GED exam as stated by the Mississippi Department of Education website www.mde.k12.ms.us:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age or older (age requirements may vary, check with your local testing center for more details)
  • Must be a resident of Mississippi
  • Must have withdrawn from a regular high school program for at least six months
  • Not a high school graduate

Exam Format

The exam consists of five different subject sections taken over seven and a half hours:

  • Language Arts - Writing
    • A 45 minute essay question.
  • Language Arts - Reading
  • Mathematics (Part 1 and 2)
    • A calculator may be used on Part 1 only.
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Scoring

The score ranges from a minimum of 200 to a maximum of 800 on each subject section. The minimum required on each section is 410. The total minimum required for all subject sections is 2050. Individuals may retake all or part of the exam until a passing score is achieved.

Registration and Fees

Registration must be completed at any official Mississippi testing center. There is a fee of $40 to take the exam (or $12 per retest). Bring sufficient ID with your social security number and proof of residence. Contact the State Department of Education, www.mde.k12.ms.us for a list of approved testing centers and other relevant GED information.

Preparation

Visit your local library or bookstore to view the available GED practice materials. Inquire at your local community college or adult learning center information about GED prep courses.
