Finding GED Practice Tests

The official GED Testing Services website has sample questions and answers for each testing category. Although no actual practice tests are available on the site, you'll find links to recommended sources where you can take an actual pretest. Depending on your learning style and preferred method of study, you can also find practice tests in bookstores and libraries. The GED is a 5-part test that includes the following areas:

Language arts - writing
The writing portion has two parts. Part one tests your knowledge of grammar, mechanics, sentence structure and paragraph development. Part two requires you to write an essay about your opinion on a given topic.
Language arts - reading
This section tests your reading comprehension and how you can apply new knowledge.
Science
The science assessment will test your knowledge of earth and space science, physical science and life science.
Social studies
In this test, your knowledge of United States and world history, government, civics and geography will be assessed.
Mathematics
The math test measures your knowledge of number operations, data analysis, geometry and algebra.

Free Online GED Practice Tests

LiteracyLink, an online program run by Kentucky Educational Television (KET), has ten practice tests covering all of the content areas. Each test has approximately 20 questions. The service requires registration; however, it's free to create an account.

Steck-Vaughn offers a free GED test online, and no registration is required. It covers each content area and subsection. Answers are provided for each question with feedback available for incorrect responses. The test is offered in English and Spanish.

Adult Education Programs

You can find a GED adult education center by contacting your state department of education or by visiting the GED Testing Services website. Many adult education centers will allow you to take a pretest to help you discover your strengths and weaknesses. They might even assist you with feedback and an individualized study plan, which is a good option if you need personal instruction or help with the essay writing.
